Over 130 people joined us at the beautiful Marin Art & Garden Center for our first HOP education and fundraising event. Live owls Hibou (Great Horned Owl) and Wookie (Barn Owl) greeted our guests as they arrived. GGRO Director Allen Fish was a masterful and entertaining Master of Ceremonies, and our guest speakers were wonderful. Many thanks to Allen, MMWD Ranger Phil Johnson, College of Marin Biology Professor Joe Mueller, and Burt Tate of Bio-Pest, Inc. Later in the evening local falconer Kate Marden brought out her live Eurasian Eagle Owl!
Camile & Hibou greet arriving guests. Our event was an all volunteer effort starting with our beautiful invitation and program, both created by Mary Blake, HOP volunteer and artist. Mary did so much for us it is hard to know where to begin. Our Silent Auction had over 100 items thanks to the hard work of Rosalie Webb. Rosalie has created silent auctions for a number of environmental groups and has raised thousands and thousands of dollars for conservation in Marin and Sonoma Counties. Thank you Rosalie for raising over $3000 with the HOP Silent Auction. Special thanks to the core, or rather hard core, HOP volunteers: Anne Ardillo, Trinka Marris, Maggie Rufo, and our leader, Alex Godbe. Additional help came from Julia Camp, Andy Peterson, Anne's husband John, Florencia, Ralph Webb, and Susan Stompe. We are especially grateful to Charlotte Torgovitsky, of The Marin Art & Garden Center for all that she did to help us with our event.
Wookie makes an appearance with HOP Director Alex Godbe. Most of all we thank The Marin Art & Garden Center for allowing us to have our event at their beautiful and elegant facility - adding a real touch of class to the evening. The following individuals and companies (in no particular order) donated to the Silent Auction and/or our food and drink offerings. Please visit their web sites or stores! (More photos follow list.)

The always educational, not to mention amusing, Joe Mueller of College of Marin. Burt Tate of Bio-Pest, Inc. Call him instead of using poison!

A Eurasian Eagle Owl is always an impressive way to end an evening! Event photos copyright Robert Bloomberg. Thank you one and all!
Special thanks to Lisa Owens-Viani, of Keep Barn Owls in Berkeley, who was inspired by our event to produce an Afternoon with Owls in Berkeley in January 2006, which raised more funds for the hungry owls! |
